BPL cards
government in Karnataka issued an official directive today

In an effort to address the ongoing confusion regarding the cancellation of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards, the Congress government in Karnataka issued an official directive today. This order instructs the Food Department to take immediate measures to ensure that only the BPL cards belonging to income taxpayers or government employees are revoked.

The government stressed that the cards of all other beneficiaries should remain intact. Should any errors occur during this process, the Food Department has been directed to promptly reissue any cancelled cards.

The order requires that these actions be finalized by the end of the day, underscoring the urgency of resolving the matter swiftly. This directive follows public concerns regarding the wrongful cancellation of BPL cards, which are crucial for providing essential benefits to those in need.

Both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have repeatedly assured the public that genuinely eligible individuals will not lose their cards. “If the ration cards of impoverished families are cancelled without justification, they should be restored immediately,” stated a recent communication from the Chief Minister’s office.

The move to revoke BPL cards was initiated after a survey of BPL cardholders was conducted by the Karnataka government in August 2024, identifying 22.63 lakh individuals as ineligible for BPL status. The government initially contemplated the cancellation of these cards, causing anxiety among numerous families who depend on the benefits offered through welfare programs, and prompting criticism from the opposition.
