The Indian government has indeed abolished the windfall tax on crude oil, ATF, petrol, and diesel exports. This decision was made on December 2, 2024.
The windfall tax was introduced in July 2022 to capitalize on the surge in global oil prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, with the subsequent decline in oil prices, the effectiveness of the tax diminished.
The removal of the windfall tax is expected to benefit oil producers and refiners, such as Reliance Industries and ONGC, by boosting their profitability.
Additionally, it could encourage higher production levels and contribute to the overall growth of the energy sector.
