Rekha Gupta, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi, has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the party’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years.
Early Life and Education
Born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, Rekha Gupta was influenced by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologies from a young age. She pursued her education at Delhi University, earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree, followed by advanced degrees in management and arts.
Political Career
Gupta’s political journey began in 1992 during her college years at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, where she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 1996-97, she served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), actively addressing student issues.
She was elected as a councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2007 and re-elected in 2012. In 2022, Gupta was the BJP’s mayoral candidate for Delhi but lost to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi.
2025 Assembly Elections
In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Gupta contested from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, defeating Aam Aadmi Party’s leader Bandana Kumari with a margin of 29,595 votes. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, ending the AAP’s decade-long rule in Delhi.
Appointment as Chief Minister
Following the BJP’s victory, Gupta was chosen as the leader of the legislative party and is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister on February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Maidan. The ceremony is expected to be attended by top BJP and NDA leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Personal Life
Rekha Gupta is married to Manish Gupta, an Agency Associate at Kotak Life Insurance and proprietor of Nikunj Enterprises. Professionally, she is an advocate.
