Senior Income Tax Official Arrested for Alleged Bribery in Mumbai
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant arrest in Mumbai, capturing a senior official of the Income Tax (IT) department. Vikas Bansal stands accused of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh in return for a lower TDS (tax deducted at source) certificate related to the sale of a property.
Allegedly, Bansal demanded the bribe to issue a low TDS certificate for the sale of a property belonging to the complainant’s NRI maternal uncle. Initially, he purportedly asked for two per cent of the property’s total value, which was later reduced to one per cent, amounting to Rs 5 crore. The CBI’s investigation revealed that Bansal accepted Rs 4 lakh as the first installment of the bribe.
Following a complaint, the CBI swiftly took action, apprehending Bansal while he was accepting the bribe on May 2 at his office in the Air India Building, Nariman Point. Subsequent searches at his office and residence led to the recovery of Rs 15 lakh in cash, along with gold jewelry and documents linked to investments in both immovable and movable properties.
