How to Verify if Your Income Tax Notice is Real or Fake

Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is mandatory in India, and mistakes in filing can lead to receiving notices from government authorities, which can be quite stressful for taxpayers. Unfortunately, there’s an increasing trend of scammers sending fake notices to citizens, aiming to exploit their fears.

Understanding Income Tax Notices

The Income Tax Department only issues notices for specific reasons such as discrepancies, non-compliance, or if the ITR is filed after the deadline. To protect yourself from scams, it’s crucial to know how to verify whether the notice you received is authentic.

Real or Fake: Identifying Your Income Tax Notice

When you receive an ITR notice, it’s essential to remain calm and avoid clicking on any links from suspicious emails or SMS. Here are the steps to check if your notice is genuine:

  1. Check for a Unique DIN Number: Each legitimate notice should have a Document Identification Number (DIN). This number acts as a unique identifier, akin to a fingerprint, and is traceable.
  2. Confirm Compliance with Guidelines: The Income Tax Department mandates that every communication issued after October 1, 2019, has a DIN. If your notice lacks this number, it is likely not genuine. According to the Income Tax Department, notices without a DIN are considered invalid and you don’t need to respond to them.

Steps to Verify Your ITR Notice

To further authenticate a notice from the Income Tax Department, you can use the e-Filing portal. Below is a step-by-step guide to verify the authenticity of your notice:

Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Portal

Go to the official Income Tax portal: Income Tax Portal.

Step 2: Navigate to Authenticate Notice/Order

On the homepage, find the “Quick Links” section and click on ‘Authenticate notice/order issued by ITD.’

Step 3: Enter Required Details

Input the DIN number along with a registered mobile number of your choice. Alternatively, you can authenticate using PAN, document type, assessment year, issue date, and mobile number.

Step 4: Provide the OTP

After filling in all necessary details, enter the OTP that you will receive on your mobile.

Step 5: Verify the Result

If the income tax notice is genuine, you will see a success message. Otherwise, the system will indicate that no record was found for the provided document number.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you are taking the right measures to confirm the legitimacy of the notice you received, protecting yourself from potential scams.
