Income Tax Department Principal Commissioner and Four Others Arrested Over Alleged Bribery Scandal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made headlines as it arrested the Principal Commissioner of the Income Tax Department in Patna and Dhanbad, Santosh Kumar, along with four other individuals. This arrest was made in connection with an alleged bribery case, involving an amount of Rs 10 lakh sourced from various tax assessees.

The four private individuals arrested alongside Principal Commissioner Santosh Kumar were Gurpal Singh, Rajiv Kumar, Ashok Chaurasia, and Pranay. The arrest took place during an alleged exchange of illegal gratification. According to officials, the CBI initiated action against Kumar based on an FIR filed in response to a complaint. The complaint alleged that Kumar was demanding and accepting bribes from different income tax assessees under his jurisdiction. It was further claimed that he was abusing his official position to provide undue benefits to the assessees.

A CBI spokesperson revealed, “It was also alleged that there were several conduits who were working on behalf of the principal commissioner of Income Tax (Patna and Dhanbad).” Following the arrests, the CBI conducted searches at approximately 21 locations in Patna, Dhanbad, and Noida. These operations led to the retrieval of incriminating documents and articles, according to officials familiar with the matter.

The accused individuals are scheduled to appear at the Court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Patna, on August 28, 2024, as confirmed by the CBI spokesperson.

This development has sent shockwaves through the region and the broader taxation community, raising concerns about the integrity of the Income Tax Department and underscoring the importance of accountability and transparency in public office.
