Scheduled Downtime for GST Common Portal: What Taxpayers Need to Know

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Common Portal will not be available for taxpayers for a duration of 8 hours due to a scheduled disaster recovery drill exercise. The Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS) Ahmedabad, under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs, announced on X (formerly Twitter) on August 2, 2025:

“For kind attention of GST Common Portal users: A Disaster Recovery Drill has been scheduled on 02/08/2025 at 10:00 PM. GST system services will remain unavailable until 06:00 AM on 03/08/2025. Kindly plan your activities accordingly.”

Impact on GST Registered Taxpayers

During this downtime, various GST services will be temporarily unavailable, which could affect taxpayers’ operations. Here’s a summary of key GST services that will not be accessible while the portal is down:

  • GST Registration
  • GST Payments
  • HSN/SAC Code Search
  • GST Refund Tracking
  • Viewing E-Ledger

Important Deadlines

GSTR-1 Filing Deadline
Businesses with a turnover of more than Rs 5 crore are required to file GSTR-1 on a monthly basis. The GSTR-1 return must be filed by the 11th of the following month. For instance, for the month of July 2025, the due date is August 11, 2025.

GST Annual Return Deadline
The GST annual return in FORM GSTR-9 must be filed by December 31, 2025, for the financial year 2024-25. However, Chartered Accountants have highlighted that the GSTR-9 form is not yet enabled. This situation raises concerns about the limited time available for completing the filing process.

Chartered Accountant Deep Koradia expressed his concerns on X:

“Dear @GST_Council. It’s already 4 months since the end of the month but GST annual returns are not live on the portal. This delay is largely due to the exemption tables not being cleared by the council. Please address this in the upcoming council meeting. It’s a 2-minute agenda for you, but timely announcements can help taxpayers comply with their obligations.”

He also requested that the yearly summary PDF of 3B and G1 be shared outside the tab of GSTR-9, allowing taxpayers to start reconciling their books with returns more efficiently.

Conclusion

Taxpayers are advised to plan accordingly and complete their necessary GST-related activities before the scheduled downtime. Staying informed about deadlines and service availability is crucial for compliance and smooth operations.
