The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has implemented new regulations to make it easier for its over 27 crore members to link their Aadhaar with their Universal Account Number (UAN) and correct any personal details. This initiative aims to cut down on bureaucratic red tape, reduce the dependency on employers, and expedite the settlement of benefits.
Direct Aadhaar-UAN Linking for Matching Details
Members whose name, gender, and date of birth match in both Aadhaar and UAN records can now directly approach their employers for Aadhaar seeding through the KYC function available on the employer portal. In these instances, no additional approval from the EPFO will be required. Previously, even simple matches faced delays due to multiple verification layers.
Simplified Joint Declaration (JD) Process
EPFO has revamped its Joint Declaration (JD) mechanism for scenarios where the Aadhaar and UAN details do not align, or if an incorrect Aadhaar has been linked.
Employer-led Corrections
Employers are now able to submit JD requests online to correct any mismatches related to name, gender, or date of birth, or to update an incorrect Aadhaar.
For Closed Units or Absent Employers
Members whose employers are no longer reachable can submit a physical JD, certified by authorized officials, at the Public Relations Officer (PRO) counter of the regional office. After verification, the PRO will upload the details for further processing. However, changes to Aadhaar details that have already been verified will not be allowed.
Relief for Minor Beneficiaries
In a significant policy shift concerning claim settlements after a member’s death, guardianship certificates will no longer be necessary for minors if benefits are credited directly to the child’s bank account. Officials have been instructed to assist claimants in opening accounts in the minor’s name, facilitating the prompt crediting of both lump sum settlements and pension amounts.
Linking via UMANG App
The EPFO has also reminded members that they can link their Aadhaar to UAN using the UMANG mobile app by following these steps:
- Enter UAN and verify the OTP sent to the registered mobile number.
- Enter Aadhaar details and verify the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile and email.
- Upon successful verification, the Aadhaar will be linked to the UAN.
Why It Matters
These updated rules aim to hasten access to provident fund services, reduce paperwork, and ensure timely payouts, especially in sensitive cases involving minors, while minimizing unnecessary procedural obstacles.
