FSSAI Enforces Vigilance on Food Safety during Festive Season
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strong directive to all states and union territories to intensify their surveillance and enforcement activities to ensure the safety of food products during the upcoming festive season. With numerous celebrations and gatherings on the horizon, the FSSAI aims to safeguard public health by preventing the sale of adulterated or contaminated food items.
In a circular sent to state food safety commissioners, the FSSAI has outlined several key areas that require heightened attention:
- Sampling and Testing: Increased frequency of sampling and testing of food products, particularly sweets, savories, and milk-related items, which are commonly consumed during festivals.
- Verification of Licenses: Regular verification of licenses and registrations of food businesses to ensure compliance with FSSAI regulations.
- Monitoring of Street Food: Stringent monitoring of street food vendors to prevent the sale of unhygienic or adulterated food items.
- Awareness Campaigns: Intensification of public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about food safety practices and the importance of choosing safe and hygienic food.
- Coordination with Other Departments: Effective coordination with other government departments like health, agriculture, and consumer affairs to ensure comprehensive oversight of the food supply chain.
The FSSAI has also advised state authorities to take necessary measures to prevent the sale of counterfeit or substandard food products, which can pose serious health risks to consumers.
By implementing these measures, the FSSAI aims to promote a culture of food safety in the country and protect the public from any health hazards during the festive season.
