NATIONAL NEWS

(1.) PM Modi launches financing facility of one lakh crore rupees under Agriculture Infrastructure Fund; Also releases sixth installment of 17,000 crore rupees to over 8.5 crore farmer beneficiaries :- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a financing facility of one lakh crore rupees under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund for agri-entrepreneurs, startups, agri-tech players and farmer groups for post-harvest management and nurturing farm assets. Only 30 days after the Cabinet formally approved the scheme, today the first sanction of over 1000 crore rupees was made to over 2,280 farmer societies. The event was conducted through a video conference and was attended by lakhs of farmers. Mr Modi also released the sixth installment of 17,000 crore rupees to more than 8.5 crore farmer beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said this fund will also provide debt financing facilities to farmers. He said, for post harvest management infrastructure and community farming assets, the fund will act as a catalyst. Mr Modi said the objective of making farmers self sufficient is being fulfilled through the PM-KISAN scheme. The Prime Minister said, this scheme provides a good opportunity for start-ups in agriculture to avail the benefits and scale their operations, thereby creating an ecosystem that reaches farmers in every corner of the country.

(2.) President honours 202 freedom fighters on occasion of 78th anniversary of Quit India Day :- President Ram Nath Kovind has honoured and felicitated 202 freedom fighters from across the country on the occasion of 78th anniversary of Quit India Day. In a statement, Rashtrapati Bhavan said, every year, the President hosts an At Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the anniversary of the Quit India Movement to honour freedom fighters. This year At Home reception could not be organised in view of Covid-19 pandemic. The President has requested State and Union Territories Governments to honour and felicitate freedom fighters with a shawl and angavastram by District Magistrate or Additional District Magistrate or Sub Divisional Magistrate at their homes on behalf of the President.

(3.) Sushant death case : ED questions Rhea’s brother Showik Chakraborty for 18 hours :- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Showik Chakraborty, brother of actor Rhea Chakraborty, for about 18 hours in connection with a money laundering case linked to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Showik left the central investigative agency’s office in Mumbai in the Ballard Estate area around 6:30 AM this morning after an overnight questioning session that began around noon yesterday. Officials said, Showik’s statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and he was asked about his personal businesses, income, investments and financial dealings with his sister and Rajput. He was grilled by the agency for a few hours on August 7 as well. On the same day, his sister and prime accused in the case Rhea was questioned by the agency for the first time for about eight hours. Rhea and her father Indrajit Chakraborty have been summoned to appear before the agency again on Monday.

(4.) NIA raids multiple locations in J&K, looks for Hizbul Mujahideen links in DSP Davinder Singh case :- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir to investigate financial links between former DSP Davinder Singh and Pakistan-based terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. Places raided include premises of carpet businessman Sahil Jaroo. The development comes almost a month after the NIA filed a charge sheet against six persons, including suspended DSP Davinder Singh, in a special NIA court in Jammu. The NIA has named Naveed Mushtaq alias Naveed Babu, Irfan Shafi Mir, Rafi Rather, Tanveer Ahmad Wani, and Syed Irfan in its charge sheet, besides Davinder Singh. The suspended police officer is lodged in Kathua jail at Heeranagar in Jammu division. He was arrested by the police on January 11 on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway while transporting two HM terrorists — Naveed Babu and Rafi Ahmad Rather — and a law school dropout Irfan Shafi Mir to Jammu. The NIA probe revealed that the accused were part of a deeprooted conspiracy hatched by Hizbul and Pakistani state to commit violent acts and to wage war against India.

STATE NEWS

(1.) India Meteorological Department predicts very heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra :- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Maharashtra due to a low pressure area formed over north-west and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. An IMD official said, most of the places in Maharashtra received rain or thunderstorms yesterday. He said, heavy rainfall is expected over the Vidarbha region tomorrow while Madhya Maharashtra would receive thunderstorms accompanied with lightning. Mumbai and other parts of the western coast are likely to witness strong winds with speed reaching up to 50 to 60 km per hour.

(2.) Assam govt. to provide pulse oximeter, first-line supportive medicines to COVID-19 patients in home isolation in Guwahati :- In Assam, the Health department would provide a pulse oximeter and first-line supportive medicines free to Covid 19 affected people preferring to stay in home isolation in Guwahati city from tomorrow. In a tweet, Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Health department has also activated the Tele Medicine service for them through 104.

(1.) Piyush Goyal calls upon more buyers and sellers to join GeM :- Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called upon more and more buyers and sellers to join the Government e Marketplace [GeM]. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Fourth edition of the National Public Procurement Conclave, organized by Government e Marketplace [GeM] in association with CII. Lauding the success of Government e Marketplace [GeM] in becoming a game changer in Government procurement, Mr Goyal called upon more and more buyers and sellers to join the system. Expressing the confidence that Government e Marketplace [GeM] will be able to unlock the value and save money for the nation’s development, he said that it has helped in transparent, seamless, easy, efficient and faster procurements.

IMPORTANT DAY (09 AUGUST 2020)

(1.) World Tribal Day being observed today :- International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples or World Tribal Day is being observed today. The day is aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of the world’s indigenous population. The date recognizes the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982. The day is celebrated on August 9th every year from 1994, in accordance with the declaration by the United Nations. As a continuation of 2019 being observed as the Year of Indegenous Languages, this year the World Tribal Day celebrations are focussed on preservation and documentation of tribal languages.
