The country’s first flex-fuel passenger car Wagon R was launched by Maruti Suzuki. With this launch, India’s requirement to reduce crude oil imports and lower carbon emissions will be fulfilled and energy security enhanced, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki stated. The new initiative marks a new chapter in India’s energy journey, he added.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in presence of Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India, announced their commitment towards the flex-fuel initiative on the occasion of launch of India’s first flex-fuel passenger car. The two Ministers appreciated the pioneering role of Maruti Suzuki in introducing a flex fuel technology vehicle in the country and asserted that their collaborative efforts with the automobile industry will create the necessary ecosystem for the growth of flex fuel technology in the country.
Highlighting the need for “cleaner, affordable, scalable and Atmanirbhar energy” for the country, Hisashi Takeuchi said that India was working to reduce its oil import bill and also reduce its carbon footprint. “Flex-fuel meets both objectives,” he said. The new technology would not only be self-reliant but also environment friendly. It would also help in promoting domestic fuel and support farmers and ethanol producers in the country, thereby creating employment opportunities in rural India and promoting sustainable agriculture.
