Inflation Risk to Indian Economy Rises on Account of Fuel Prices and Below-Normal Monsoon: Finance Ministry. The Indian government warns of fresh inflation risks ahead of the RBI monetary policy decision. Rising fuel prices due to the US-Iran war and a below-normal monsoon forecast are set to squeeze household budgets.
The new inflation may hit the Indian household hard in the coming months as the Union Finance Ministry has identified increased global energy prices and below-normal monsoon this year as fresh risks to inflation.
The Department of Economic Affairs, Finance Ministry has brought out the monthly economic review for May 2026. The review brings out the inflation risks that are building up in the economy. The review will be placed before the MPC meeting of RBI to be held on Friday, 5 June 2026.
Key Drivers of India’s Fresh Inflation Threat
While the domestic economic fundamentals are ‘cautiously resilient’ and there is no cause for worry on this count, external and climatic circumstances have created fresh inflation risks which need to be watched, Finance ministry said.
Rising global energy prices: The US-Iran war has created a serious crisis of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, petrol, diesel and cooking gas prices have shooting up across the globe. These prices are already being charged in the market.
As reported by the Department of Economic Affairs, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted below normal to normal monsoon season in the country for the year 2026. A below normal monsoon can impact the sowing of crops and hence farm output. This would also reduce farm income leading to a decrease in rural consumption.
A weaker Rupee: The Indian rupee slumped to a record low of nearly 97 against the greenback recently, which would lead to a higher import bill and would thus translate into higher cost of essential items.
Wholesale Inflation continues to remain Elevated: The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) has further increased to 8.3% in April 2026, as compared to 3.88% in March 2026, registering three-and-a-half year high. So far, retail price increase has not taken place. However, given that prices of manufacturers are increasing sharply, it is only a matter of time before these get transmitted to consumers.
Wholesale Price To Transfer To Retailers And Consumers.
This increase has not yet translated into higher retail prices but that will be the case in future.
The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) had increased to 8.3% in April over 3.88% in the preceding month. The increase in WPI is largely on account of increase in producer and upstream costs which have increased sharply over the last three-and-a-half years. These increased costs are likely to get transferred to consumers in the subsequent period.
Will the RBI Raise Interest Rates?
The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee is set to announce its next policy decision on Friday, 5 June 2026. Given the record low rupee and spiking WPI, analysts are expecting the central bank to announce a tighter monetary policy in order to stem inflationary pressures and defend the rupee on the foreign exchange market.
The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee is slated to announce its next policy decision on Friday, 5 June 2026. Given the record-low rupee and above normal WPI pressures on the economy, it is expected to introduce a tighter monetary policy in order to contain the damage to the economy and volatile markets through interest rate and liquidity management, and to defend the rupee through interest rate differential.
The Road Ahead: An Agile Economic Policy
The duration of the blockades will be the biggest variable affecting India’s economic growth, said the Finance Ministry in the report.
All elements of economic policy, namely monetary, fiscal and structural, therefore, will have to remain agile in order to ensure that short term measures to check up inflation do not stoke up new growth inhibiting forces and thus thwart the medium term objectives of growth.
