A New Dawn for Jammu and Kashmir: PM Modi Inaugurates World’s Highest Railway Arch Bridge and Vande Bharat Service
Katra, Jammu and Kashmir – June 6, 2025: In a monumental step towards enhancing connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the awe-inspiring Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and flagged off the much-anticipated Vande Bharat trains connecting Katra and Srinagar. This historic occasion marks the culmination of decades of perseverance and engineering marvel, finally linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via a seamless rail network.

The Chenab Bridge, a crown jewel of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess. Soaring an astounding 359 meters above the Chenab River, it surpasses even the Eiffel Tower in height. Built to withstand extreme weather conditions, including high wind speeds and seismic activity, this 1,315-meter-long steel and concrete arch bridge is a symbol of resilience and determination. Its construction, a challenging feat in difficult terrain, has been lauded globally as a landmark achievement in civil engineering.

Complementing this architectural wonder, the flagging off of the Vande Bharat trains between Katra and Srinagar promises to revolutionize travel in the region. These semi-high-speed trains, specially designed to operate efficiently in the unique climatic conditions of Jammu and Kashmir, will drastically reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar to approximately three hours, cutting down existing journey durations by two to three hours. This improved connectivity will undoubtedly boost tourism, facilitate trade, and provide immense convenience to local commuters, pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno Devi, and security forces alike.

The USBRL project, with an estimated cost of over Rs 43,780 crore, encompasses a vast network of tunnels and bridges, ensuring all-weather connectivity. The inauguration of the Chenab Bridge and the Vande Bharat service signifies the completion of a long-cherished dream to bring Kashmir closer to the national mainstream.

Beyond the immediate benefits of reduced travel time and enhanced accessibility, these infrastructure projects are expected to catalyze significant socio-economic integration in Jammu and Kashmir. They will open up new avenues for employment, stimulate local businesses, and pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for the people of the region. The seamless rail link will not only improve the ease of doing business but also foster cultural exchange and national unity.

As the Vande Bharat trains glide across the majestic Chenab Bridge, they will carry with them the aspirations of a region now more connected, more accessible, and more integrated than ever before. This day will forever be etched in the annals of Indian infrastructure development, marking a new chapter of progress and prosperity for Jammu and Kashmir.
