Actor Vijay will soon take the oath to become the new chief minister of Tamil Nadu after TVJ emerged as the single largest party in the assembly election.
However, he has landed in legal trouble related to his 2015 Tamil film Puli.
According to News18, a writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court, requesting a formal complaint against him on suspected income tax irregularities related to the 2015 Tamil film Puli.
The petition was first filed in the court last month. The Registry had initially refused to assign a case number.
Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan’s division bench ordered the Registry to number the plea, subject to maintainability, on April 8.
The petition is based on income tax proceedings that were started following Puli’s release in 2015.
The Income Tax Department searched locations connected to Vijay in September 2015, according to documents included in the plea.
Certain items are said to have been found during these raids, revealing unreported cash transactions related to the actor’s compensation for the movie.
According to the plea, Vijay received Rs 4.93 crore in cash from P.T. Selvakumar and Shibu, in addition to a cheque for Rs 16 crore for his role in Puli. As a result, the plea argues that Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) was only deposited for the sum indicated on the cheque and not for the purported cash payment.
This coincides with the huge response to Vijay’s political debut. With 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, his party is now the largest. It is still 10 seats away from the majority threshold of 118, though.
The TVK approached the Congress on Tuesday for support to complete the 118 majority. Congress quickly decided to back the new party on Wednesday.
Putting on a secular front, Vijay is shunning the NDA allies in favour of the minor allies of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), led by the DMK.
In order to reach the 118 mark, Vijay has also requested assistance from the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK.
The TVK and AIADMK appeared to have gained some momentum overnight, which prompted the Congress to grant Vijay’s plea to maintain Tamil Nadu’s secularism and avoid falling into the hands of the BJP and its allies.
Additionally, Congress has officially broken its 20-year ties with the DMK while declaring its new partnership with the TVK.
Vijay reportedly wrote to Rajendra Arlekar, the governor of the state, requesting an invitation to form the government.
Several media reports have suggested that Vijay is expected to take the oath of office as Tamil Nadu’s next chief minister on May 7.
There is currently no confirmation around this.
Meanwhile, Vijay is speculated to quit acting to focus on his political career. His rumoured last film, Jana Nayagan, is yet to receive clearance from CBFC.
