India’s digital tax filing ecosystem has achieved a significant milestone, with the number of income tax returns (ITRs) filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 crossing the 50 lakh (5 million) mark. This robust activity highlights the growing adoption and efficiency of the online tax filing process.

According to the latest statistics updated as of June 23, 2025, a staggering 5,082,655 returns have already been filed for AY 2025-26. This figure underscores the proactive approach of taxpayers and the streamlined procedures put in place by the tax authorities.

Accompanying this impressive filing count, the number of returns verified has also shown healthy progress, with 4,751,736 returns verified for the same assessment year. This high verification rate indicates smooth processing and compliance.

Furthermore, the system has efficiently processed 10,802 verified ITRs for AY 2025-26, demonstrating the speed and effectiveness of the backend operations.

The overall growth in the digital tax landscape is further evidenced by the massive user base of 130,368,513 Individual Registered Users. This vast number of registered users forms the backbone of India’s evolving tax administration, making it one of the largest and most digitally advanced in the world.

The consistent increase in ITR filings, particularly crossing the 50 lakh threshold well in advance of the typical filing deadlines, reflects a positive trend towards greater tax compliance and the success of digital initiatives aimed at simplifying the tax payment process for citizens.
