Investigation Into Jawed Shaikh: Income Tax Department Summons Driver Linked to Political Figures
In a significant development in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jawed Shaikh, a driver for Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre and his MLA son Vilas, has been summoned by the income tax department. The summons requires him to present his books of accounts and related documents for scrutiny.
Shaikh is currently under investigation by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) regarding the circumstances surrounding a substantial land gift he received from Mir Mehmood Ali Khan, a descendant of Salar Jung. This prime land is valued at hundreds of crores, which has raised multiple questions.
On July 3, Jawed Shaikh received a fresh summons under section 131(1A) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This section empowers the income tax department to enforce attendance, inspect properties, and issue commissions. It also allows the department to examine the individual under oath and mandate the submission of essential financial documents.
In its notice, the income tax department warned Shaikh that any failure to comply would lead to penalties under section 272A(1)(C) of the I-T Act, which enables investigation officers to impose a fine of Rs 10,000 for each instance of non-compliance.
Shaikh’s connection to the Bhumre family has put him at the center of the investigation following the allegations that he received approximately 8.5 acres of land in two installments through a hibanama (gift deed). The total market valuation of these plots is estimated to be around Rs 500 crores.
Documents reveal that both transactions involved common witnesses, and the bonds were authenticated by the same notary lawyer. Notably, applications to record Jawed Shaikh’s name on the PR card for both properties were submitted on February 9, 2023, and his name was officially recorded on May 25, 2023, and June 28, 2024.
These valuable plots are situated within Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where the EOW is currently investigating a related complaint. In recent weeks, the Economic Offences Wing has recorded statements from Khan, his four children, and Jawed Shaikh. Given their unsatisfactory responses, the EOW plans to summon them again to ensure full cooperation in the ongoing inquiry.
Attempts to reach Jawed Shaikh for comments have been unsuccessful, as he has not responded to phone calls and messages regarding this matter.
As this case unfolds, observers remain keen to see how it will impact both the individuals involved and the political landscape in the region.
