Guide to Claiming TDS Refunds and Checking Eligibility

As taxpayers prepare to file their Income Tax Returns (ITR), it’s important to focus on the often overlooked aspect of tax deducted at source (TDS). Claiming refunds for TDS is essential to avoid overpaying taxes if deductions were made from your income throughout the year. Here’s what you need to know:

Understanding TDS

TDS is a mechanism used by the government to collect tax at the source of income. It is applicable to various sources of income such as salaries, interest on fixed deposits, and professional fees. The purpose of TDS is to ensure that tax is paid as income is earned, rather than waiting until the end of the financial year.

What is a TDS Refund?

A TDS refund involves receiving back excess tax that has been deducted at the source. This refund can be granted if the actual investments made by the taxpayer at the end of the year exceed the expected investments declared at the beginning of the year. In case of delay in paying the TDS refund, the Income Tax department is liable to pay the amount along with a simple interest of 6 per cent, as per Section 244A of the Income Tax Act.
