A BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) official, Mr. Munish Moudgil, Special Commissioner (Revenue), has stated that supporting the 10% of property tax defaulters in Bengaluru is going against the 90% of honest taxpayers.
This statement was made in the context of the BBMP’s ongoing efforts to recover property tax arrears from a total of 3.49 lakh defaulters who owe the civic body ₹390 crore. Out of these, 1.73 lakh are considered chronic defaulters.
Mr. Moudgil emphasized that the BBMP is determined to collect property tax as per the law and urged for moral support in their drive against persistent tax evaders. He also mentioned that many defaulters did not even utilize the one-time tax settlement scheme that offered relief on penalties and interest.
The BBMP has identified Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli, and RR Nagar zones as having the highest number of property tax defaulters.
Starting April 1st, the BBMP will be implementing stricter measures, including penalties equal to the outstanding tax amount along with an annual interest of up to 15%, for those who have not cleared their property tax dues.
Responding to criticism from some MLAs, BBMP Special Commissioner (Revenue) Munish Moudgil stated that anyone supporting these 10% chronic defaulters is acting against the 90% of honest taxpayers and public interest.
