In a major development during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the Income Tax Department has reported a remarkable seizure of Rs 1100 crore in cash and jewellery, setting a new record. According to sources, this marks a substantial 182% increase from the Rs 390 crore seized during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The heightened vigilance and enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which came into effect on March 16, have been pivotal in these significant seizures. The MCC, enforced nationwide, aims to regulate the conduct of political parties and candidates, specifically focusing on preventing unethical practices and promoting ethical behavior throughout the electoral process.
Delhi and Karnataka emerged at the forefront with the highest seizures, each state comprising more than Rs 200 crore worth of cash and jewellery. Following closely, Tamil Nadu recorded the second-highest seizure amounting to Rs 150 crore, while Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha collectively accounted for more than Rs 100 crore worth of cash and jewellery.
With the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing the commencement of polls for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, central agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure strict adherence to guidelines. The primary focus remains on monitoring the movement of cash, liquor, freebies, drugs, jewellery, and other items that could potentially influence voters.
Notably, 24×7 control rooms have been established in each state to combat the illegal movement of cash, especially by political figures vying for electoral advantage. The MCC dictates that individuals found carrying cash exceeding Rs 50,000 or possessing new items worth over Rs 10,000 without supporting documents will face immediate seizure, underscoring the stringent measures in place to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
Furthermore, seized cash exceeding Rs 10 lakh will be subject to further scrutiny by the Income Tax Department, illustrating the gravity of the repercussions for those attempting to subvert the electoral guidelines.
