The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has removed more than 1,400 Chartered Accountants from its Register of Members for non-payment of prescribed membership fees. The action, notified in the Gazette of India, was taken under Section 20(1)(c) of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, and Regulation 18 of the Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988. The removals became effective from November 1, 2023.
Each affected member’s name and Membership Registration Number (MRN) were listed in the official notification. Removal from the Register means the professionals lose their official recognition and the right to practice as Chartered Accountants until they clear outstanding dues and apply for reinstatement.
This significant step underscores ICAI’s strict enforcement of membership compliance. The Institute, established under the 1949 Act, regulates the CA profession in India and maintains high standards of education, examination, and ethics. Non-payment of fees is treated as a serious lapse that can result in exclusion from the profession’s statutory register.
