GST Network (GSTN) has announced an important modification to the e-Invoicing system concerning Invoice Reference Number (IRN) generation. This adjustment, set to take effect on 1st June 2025, will alter how invoice or document numbers are handled by the Invoice Reporting Portal (IRP). Notably, invoice numbers will now be regarded as case-insensitive, meaning uppercase and lowercase variations will be treated as identical.

Key Modifications

Case-Insensitive Treatment of Invoice Numbers:

  • Effective 1st June 2025, the IRP (Invoice Reporting Portal) will regard invoice/document numbers as case-insensitive for IRN generation.
  • Under this new regulation, invoice numbers reported in different cases (e.g., “abc”, “ABC”, or “Abc”) will be seen as the same.
  • This change promotes uniformity and helps eliminate duplicate IRN generation due to differences in letter casing.

Automatic Conversion to Uppercase:

  • To ensure consistency in filings, all invoice numbers will be automatically converted to uppercase before generating the IRN.
  • This change aligns with the GSTR-1 filing system, which already treats invoice numbers in a case-insensitive manner.

Implications for Taxpayers

  • Preventing Duplicate Entries: Businesses must understand that variations in letter casing will no longer lead to distinct IRNs, thereby averting accidental duplicates.
  • System Adaptation: Firms should ensure their ERP and accounting software are updated to avoid discrepancies when generating and reporting invoices.
  • Compliance with GSTR-1 Reporting: Since the GSTR-1 system already utilizes case-insensitive processing, this update enhances consistency across different GST platforms.
