GST on Petroleum Products

The Indian government, specifically the Revenue Secretary, has expressed its desire to bring petroleum products under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. This would mean that the current complex system of multiple taxes on fuel, including central excise duty, value-added tax (VAT), and central sales tax, would be replaced by a single, unified tax.

Potential Benefits of Bringing Petroleum Products under GST:

  • Simplified taxation system: A single GST rate would streamline the tax structure.
  • Reduced tax burden: While the exact GST rate is yet to be determined, it’s possible that it could be lower than the combined current taxes.
  • Increased tax revenue: Bringing petroleum products under GST could potentially increase tax revenue for both the central and state governments.
  • Reduced smuggling: A uniform tax rate across the country could deter fuel smuggling.

It’s important to note that while the Centre is keen on this move, the final decision rests with the GST Council, which comprises representatives from both the central and state governments.
