GST Notices Issued to Importers: Rs 1,000 Crore Additional Tax Demand
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has recently issued notices to more than 50 importers of spices, dry fruits, processed food, and poultry, seeking additional payments totaling an estimated Rs 1,000 crore. This action comes in response to concerns over the storage of products at warehouses that differ from the actual place of supply by importers of perishable agricultural commodities.
Importers were cautioned regarding the potential cancellation of registration due to their failure to register temporary storage warehouses under GST provisions, which mandate the registration of the place of supply. It has been revealed that the importers utilize temporary warehouses near a port, as well as specialized cold storage units, for further supplies to domestic customers.
This development highlights the GST department’s intensified efforts to ensure compliance with regulations, particularly in the context of temporary storage and place of supply requirements under the GST provisions. As the affected importers navigate the implications of these notices, the industry awaits further updates on this matter.
