Nitin Gadkari said that the central government is continuously working towards increasing the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country and in the next two years, the prices of electric vehicles will come down to the level of petrol vehicles.
Petrol, diesel will be brought under the purview of GST, then the tax on them will be reduced and the revenue of both the Center and the states will increase.
The GST Council in its September 17 meeting had decided to keep petrol and diesel out of the purview of the Goods and Services Tax. On the question related to the reduction of excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and 10 respectively by the Central Government, Gadkari said that the Central Government has taken a good step to give relief to the common man.
He said that the way the Center has cut excise duty giving relief to the common man, it is expected that the state governments will also follow it and cut Value Added Tax (VAT). This will give more relief to the common man.
In the next two years, the price of electric vehicles will come down to the level of petrol vehicles. Gadkari said that the central government is promoting the use of alternative fuels like ethanol, CNG to reduce the import of fossil fuels.
