A big meet today of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, which includes the Centre and states, is expected to decide on bringing petrol and diesel within the ambit of indirect tax and reducing taxes on COVID-19 medicines. This is the first on-ground GST Council meeting in almost 20 months. The last meeting was held in 2019, before the pandemic.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) appealed to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to bring petroleum products under the purview of GST, saying that it could make petrol cheaper by Rs 20.
