Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Superintendent of CGST in Gujarat’s Gandhidham for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh.
The accused has been identified as S Maheshwari, Superintendent, CGST (Audit).
A case was registered based on the allegations of demanding Rs 2.40 lakh in bribes from the complainant for the containers he cleared during his earlier posting as Superintendent, Customs, Kandla Port.
It was further alleged that the accused told the complainant to pay the amount so as to save him from the audit that he threatened to conduct.
The CBI then laid a trap and caught Maheshwari while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the complainant. Searches were conducted at the office and residential premises of the accused which led to the recovery of Rs 6.50 lakh and incriminating documents, the CBI said.
