EPFO to Integrate with UPI for Smooth Claim Processing

The executive committee of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s (EPFO) Central Board of Trustees (CBT) has approved a plan to integrate its operations with the United Payment Interface (UPI), aiming to facilitate seamless processing of claims by subscribers.

In a recent meeting, the CBT was briefed on the framework that will allow subscribers to withdraw their provident fund claims through UPI platforms. A final approval for this framework is expected to be granted during the upcoming CBT meeting.

An official has indicated that “by late April or early May, the facility for withdrawal of claims through UPI will become functional.” The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) is currently assessing the technical aspects of this integration and is prepared to execute the plan.

At present, the EPF is focused on developing a centralized database intended for a streamlined payment system within the EPFO. This database is anticipated to be operational by the end of March and will store all subscriber records in one place, even if they change locations. An official explained, “The centralized database is necessary for withdrawal of claims through UPI. The moment it’s done, the feature (UPI withdrawal) will be rolled out.”

Once the EPF is connected to UPI, subscribers will be able to conveniently access their claim amounts via a digital wallet. Over the past seven months, the EPFO has implemented significant reforms aimed at improving the ease of living for members, enhancing pension services, streamlining provident fund (PF) claim processing, and upgrading its IT systems.

“These reforms have enhanced service delivery for millions of EPF members and pensioners, with further improvements expected soon,” stated Labour Secretary Sumita Dawra.

In the fiscal year 2025 to date, the EPFO has processed claims for over 50 million subscribers, marking the highest number ever, with more than Rs 2.05 lakh crore disbursed. In comparison, FY24 had 44.5 million claims settled, totaling Rs 1.82 lakh crore.
