In a transformative step toward digital empowerment, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has unveiled a new method for generating and activating the Universal Account Number (UAN). Starting August 1, 2025, employees can now create their UAN directly via the UMANG App using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology, eliminating the need to go through their employers.
This development was detailed in an EPFO circular issued on July 30, 2025, indicating that the traditional UAN generation process through employers will remain applicable only to international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
Key Features of the New System:
Three services will be available on the UMANG App:
- UAN Allotment and Activation for new users.
- UAN Activation for existing users who haven’t activated their UAN.
- Face Authentication for updating records associated with activated UANs.
Creating or Activating Your UAN:
To create a new UAN, users need to download the UMANG App, undergo face authentication, and receive their UAN via SMS. For activation, simply enter your existing UAN and follow the verification process.
Advantages:
- Direct UAN generation without employer involvement.
- Swift and secure Aadhaar verification.
- Instant access to EPFO services, including passbook viewing and claim submissions.
For assistance, users can contact the UMANG Helpdesk or EPFO Customer Support.
