Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has begun the process of depositing interest into Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. EPFO has assured subscribers that the full interest will be credited and there will be no loss. EPF subscribers may soon see the interest reflected in their accounts. To check whether the interest has been credited, subscribers can access their passbook, which displays details of their provident fund balance, online from EPFO’s website.

interest will be credited in full as it accrues and there will be no loss of interest. The clarification from EPFO comes after the Finance Ministry addressed concerns about the non-credit of interest in EPF accounts in October. According to the ministry, there was no loss of interest for any EPFO subscriber as of October 5 and the interest was being credited to all EPF accounts, but it may not be reflected in statements due to a software upgrade being implemented by EPFO to attribute the change in tax incidence.

The Central Board of Trustees (CBT), which is responsible for setting the interest rate for EPF accounts, announced an interest rate of 8.1% for the financial year 2021-22 in March. This rate will be deposited in EPF accounts when it is credited to the members. Interest is normally calculated on a monthly basis in EPF accounts, but it is credited at the end of the financial year. The transferred interest is added to the next month’s balance and then compounded to calculate interest on that month’s balance. All EPFO customers can expect to receive good news soon.
