Three-Year Sentence for Income Tax Officer in Ahmedabad

On August 21, 2026, the CBI Court in Ahmedabad sentenced Jarnail B. Singh, an Income Tax Officer, to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 20,000 for bribery. He was convicted for demanding Rs. 10,000 from a complainant for issuing tax exemptions for a charitable trust.

CBI Court Ahmedabad awards Three Years Rigorous Imprisonment to Income Tax Officer in a Bribery Case

The CBI Court, Ahmedabad, today, i.e., 21.08.2026, has convicted and sentenced the accused Jarnail B. Singh, Income Tax Officer (OSD), 0/0 the Joint/Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit) Pratyakashkar Bhavan, Ahmedabad, to Rigorous Imprisonment for Three Years with a fine of Rs. 20,000, in a Bribery Case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the instant case on 22.02.2013 on allegations that the accused Income Tax Officer demanded an illegal gratification of Rs. 10,000 from the complainant for issuing a certificate u/s 11 and 80G of Income Tax Act, for giving exemption to the trust “Shrilekha Vividhlaxi Charitable Trust”.

The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting an illegal gratification of Rs. 10,000 from the complainant. The accused was arrested on 22.02.2013. The chargesheet in the matter was filed by CBI on 31.10.2013.

The Hon’ble Court, after the trial, convicted and sentenced the accused on 21.08.2026, accordingly.
