When you file your ITR, you may expect a tax refund to reach your bank account. If the refund is delayed, not credited, or shows as issued, consider these six checks to understand and resolve the issue.
Check the refund status on the Income Tax portal
Log in to the e-filing portal and view the refund status to see the current stage (pending, processed, or credited). Note any message or reference number for follow-up.
Verify bank account details linked to your ITR
Ensure the bank name, account number, and IFSC code on the portal match your records. A mismatch or an inactive account can block credit. Update details if needed and follow the portal’s instructions.
Check for processing issues or data mismatches in your return
Common blockers include errors in the form or discrepancies between reported income, tax deducted at source, or credit claims. Correct any inaccuracies and re-submit if the system allows.
Look for tax demands or credit mismatches
Review Form 26AS and other tax-credit data to ensure there are no outstanding demands or misapplied credits. Address any mismatches or notices promptly, as they can delay refunds.
Confirm the refund type and credit channel
Refunds are usually issued via direct credit to your bank account or through NEFT/RTGS. Verify the channel and ensure your bank can receive the payment. Update if needed.
If unresolved, request refund reissue or seek official assistance
If the status shows issued but the credit is not received, or the case is stuck, you can request a refund reissue on the portal or contact the CPC/Taxpayer Service Center for help and escalation.
Keep records of notices, reference numbers, and bank statements to help resolve the issue quickly, and be mindful that refund timelines can vary.
