C Joseph Vijay officially began his role as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Sunday, quickly signing off on several key initiatives aimed at fulfilling his election promises.
His first decision involved approving the rollout of 200 units of free electricity for household consumers. He also initiated the creation of a special force dedicated to ensuring women’s safety and approved a proposal to establish an anti-drug unit in each district, addressing the pressing issue of drug use in the state.
One of the most noteworthy announcements he made during his oath-taking ceremony was aimed at his political rival, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Vijay stated that a white paper outlining the state’s finances from 2021 to 2026 would soon be released. He expressed concern over the DMK government’s legacy, highlighting a staggering debt burden of Rs 10 lakh crore left behind. “I want to show you all the financial burden the previous government has placed on me,” he remarked.
Commitment to Transparent Governance
During his address as Chief Minister, Vijay assured the public of his commitment to maintaining a transparent administration and reiterated his intention to fulfill every promise laid out in his party’s manifesto. “I will strive to keep my promises if you grant me the opportunity and support,” he declared, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Taking a jab at the AIADMK party, reportedly considering collaboration with the DMK, he emphasized that he would uphold his responsibilities openly and transparently.
Vijay highlighted that his primary focus areas would include education, food supply, healthcare, and women’s safety, though he did not provide a detailed action plan.
Aiming for Stability
In his inaugural address, Vijay aimed to dispel worries regarding the stability of his government. He reassured the public that there would be a unified leadership structure, asserting that he would be the sole authority in the administration. This reassurance comes as the government holds a slim majority of 120 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, with several minor parties supporting it.
He also adopted a conciliatory approach, vowing to bring all citizens, even those who have been critical of him, along on Tamil Nadu’s journey toward development. “Even those who criticized and humiliated me are my people,” he said.
A Message to Young Supporters
Speaking directly to his supporters, many of whom are members of Gen Z and Millennials, Vijay emphasized his dedication to their welfare. “You are my life. To my young nanba and nanbis, Vijay mama will do everything good for you,” he expressed. His followers affectionately refer to each other as “Nanba” (male friend) and “Nanbi” (female friend), terms that resonate deeply in Tamil culture.
Vijay also took a moment to recognize the relentless efforts of his party workers, who dedicated two years to help the young party secure power. “Without you (cadres), I’d be nothing. To all my dear virtual warriors, thank you so much,” he concluded.
