The Union Government introduced the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 in the Lok Sabha.

The amendment would allow the Aadhaar number to be used for registration of voters “for the purpose of establishing the identification,” as per a report by IANS. The amendment also aims at introducing gender-neutral terms in the Representation of the People Act by replacing the word “wife” with “spouse.”

Also seeks to allow the officers to ask for the number from “persons already included in the electoral roll for the purposes of authentication of entries in electoral roll, and to identify registration of name of the same person in the electoral roll of more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency”.
