The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) tax collection model is being considered for implementation in other municipal areas across India. This model has been successful in Bengaluru in increasing property tax collection rates.
The key features of the BBMP model that are likely to be adopted elsewhere include:
- GIS-based property tax system: This system uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to map properties and track tax payments.
- Online property tax payment: This allows taxpayers to pay their taxes online, which is convenient and efficient.
- Frequent reminders: Taxpayers are sent reminders about their tax payments through SMS and email.
- Sealing of premises: If a taxpayer fails to pay their taxes, their property may be sealed.
- Confiscation of moveable items: In some cases, the BBMP may confiscate the moveable items of a taxpayer who has not paid their taxes.
The BBMP tax collection model is a promising approach for improving property tax collection rates in other municipal areas. Minister for Municipal Administration Rahim Khan has said that the government is contemplating the introduction of property tax collection model followed by the Brihat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in other municipality limits also.
