New FASTag Rules: Avoiding Toll Penalties Post Regulation Update
New FASTag Rules: Avoiding Toll Penalties Post Regulation

Under the revised regulations, users can no longer count on last-minute recharges if their FASTag has been blacklisted for over 60 minutes prior to arriving at the toll booth.

Neglecting to top up your FASTag or sorting out account-related issues may now result in hefty penalties. With the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) enforcing new validation guidelines effective February 17, it’s essential for users to follow stricter timelines to avoid interruptions at toll plazas.

Key Amendments in FASTag Validation

According to the NPCI circular issued on January 28, FASTag transactions will be validated within designated timeframes corresponding to when the tag is scanned at a toll plaza. Two primary conditions have emerged:

  • 60 minutes before the toll scan – If a FASTag has been blacklisted, hotlisted, or flagged for low balance for more than an hour before reaching the toll plaza, the transaction will be refused.
  • 10 minutes after the toll scan – Should the FASTag remain inactive or on the blacklist for 10 minutes following the scan, the transaction will also be declined.

If both conditions apply, the system will reject the transaction with error code 176, and the user will incur a penalty of double the toll fee.

Impact on FASTag Users

FASTag accounts are categorized into two statuses: whitelisted (active) and blacklisted (inactive). A FASTag can be blacklisted for several reasons:

With the new regulations in place, users must avoid relying on last-minute recharges if their FASTag has been blacklisted for over 60 minutes before they arrive at the toll booth. Nonetheless, a recharge made within 10 minutes of the attempt may enable the user to pay only the regular toll fee instead of facing a penalty.

Legal professionals have highlighted the necessity of proactive account management for FASTag users under this updated framework. One expert noted that the total of 70 minutes grace period—comprising both pre- and post-scan intervals—is intended to lessen inconvenience while promoting smoother toll operations. However, they cautioned that those unaware of these changes could encounter unanticipated penalties.

Another expert emphasized that maintaining an adequate balance in FASTag accounts and timely updating KYC details is vital for preventing transaction issues. While these changes bolster system integrity and curb fraudulent activities, they might present challenges for users who are not familiar with the updates.

Recommended Actions for FASTag Users
To avoid incurring penalties and ensure smooth toll transactions, FASTag users are encouraged to:

  • Keep their accounts sufficiently funded prior to embarking on long trips.
  • Regularly update KYC information to circumvent blacklisting.
  • Verify their FASTag status before arriving at toll plazas.
  • By staying informed and managing their FASTag diligently, users can adeptly navigate the revised rules, minimizing delays and unwarranted penalties.

Experts view these adjustments as a movement towards optimizing toll operations and reducing conflicts at plazas. “This system will enhance transaction reliability, streamline the toll experience, and motivate users to stay ahead with their account management,” a legal professional remarked.
