Donald Trump To India: America’s New President

Donald Trump has made his intentions clear regarding tariffs before assuming power. He stated that he will work under the “US First” policy, imposing taxes in proportion to those levied by other countries on American products. Trump frequently mentioned India while discussing these taxes.

Tit for Tat

When asked about a possible trade deal with China, Trump referenced India and Brazil. In a media interaction, he emphasized that if other countries impose taxes on American products, the U.S. will respond in kind. He reiterated his “tit for tat” policy: if they impose taxes on us, we will reciprocate with equal measures on their products.

Fairness is Important

Trump pointed out that many countries impose hefty taxes on American goods, while the U.S. has not reciprocated. However, he stressed that this will change. He specifically noted that India and Brazil are among the nations with high tariffs on certain American products. According to Trump, fairness is key in international trade. For instance, if India imposes a 100% tariff on American goods, the U.S. will do the same in return.

He elaborated by saying, “They send bicycles, we send them bicycles. They charge us 100%-200% duty. India charges more duty, and Brazil is also not far behind in this matter. If they want the same, then fine, we will also levy the same tax on their products.” Trump’s position has garnered support from Howard Lutnick, the incoming Commerce Secretary, who believes that other countries should expect equivalent treatment based on how they treat American goods.

Matter of Concern

This stance taken by Donald Trump is viewed as potentially problematic for India. However, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal remains optimistic. He recently dismissed concerns over India losing money due to a potential U.S. tariff hike, suggesting that India could consider reducing tariffs on American products that face no domestic competition. It’s worth noting that trade relations between India and America have been robust, providing a foundation for potential negotiations moving forward.
