Significant Update

This year, there has been a notable decline of 1.9 million income tax returns (ITRs) due to numerous glitches encountered on the income tax portal.

It has been reported that there is a reduction of 1.9 million income tax returns this year as a result of numerous issues on the income tax portal.

According to a recent screenshot from the @IncomeTaxIndia e-filing website, a total of 70.9 million ITRs were filed by the extended due date of 15th September 2025, which was pushed back from the original deadline of 31st July 2025 because the portal was not equipped with the new forms and e-filing utilities.

In comparison, last year, 72.8 million ITRs were filed by the 31st July 2024 deadline, reflecting a growth rate of 7.55%. If we consider last year’s figures as a benchmark, we would expect approximately 78.2 million ITRs to have been filed by this year’s due date. Hence, there is an overall reduction of about 7.3 million ITRs, representing an approximate decrease of 10%.

A major concern arises from a tweet posted by the department yesterday at 12:13 AM, declaring that a record 73 million+ ITRs have been filed as of 15th September 2025, exceeding last year’s total of 72.8 million. However, the website currently indicates that only 70.9 million ITRs were filed.

This raises the question: which data is accurate and potentially misleading? The website, which reflects 70.9 million and is regularly updated by the department, or the tweet claiming 73 million?

This needs a proper investingation
