Over 4.68 lakh taxpayers file ITR for income over ₹1 crore till Feb 28, latest Statistics

The most recent data from the income tax department reveals that over 9.11 crore registered users have submitted their income tax returns (ITR) for the fiscal year 2024-25, as of February 28, 2025. This is significant considering the total number of registered users is 13.96 crore, indicating that over 65 percent of registered users have completed their filings for the current year.

Among these, the data shows that 8.56 crore tax returns have been e-verified by the same date.

In terms of refunds issued, the income tax department has processed refunds amounting to ₹3.92 lakh crore up to February 28, 2025, during FY 2024-25. Notably, more than 40 percent of users have utilized the online utility provided by the tax department for filing their returns.

Taxpayers with Income Over ₹1 Crore

Among these taxpayers, those with an income ranging from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore number 3,89,380, while those earning between ₹5 crore to ₹10 crore total 36,274, as per data from the income tax department (ITD) until February 28, 2025.

Moreover, 43,004 taxpayers have filed income tax returns for amounts exceeding ₹10 crore. In total, 4,68,658 individuals (3.89 lakh + 36K + 43K) have filed tax returns for incomes above ₹1 crore during FY 2024-25.

Maharashtra Takes the Lead

Focusing on state-wise data, Maharashtra has the highest number of tax filers, totaling 1.38 crore as of February 28. Gujarat follows with 87.90 lakh, while Uttar Pradesh reports 90.68 lakh filers. Other notable figures include 44.45 lakh in Delhi, 30.76 lakh in Andhra Pradesh, and 43.79 lakh in Punjab. Additionally, there were 87,501 tax filers from outside India.

Increase in Filing Activity

There has been notable growth in tax filings compared to last year across various income tax forms. For ITR-1, there was a 0.11 percent increase; ITR-2 reported a growth of 33.89 percent; ITR-3 saw a 15.50 percent rise; ITR-6 had a 5.59 percent increase, and ITR-5 experienced a 6.46 percent growth in 2024-25 compared to the previous year.
