ITR Filing Deadline:
- The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for AY 2025-26 for non-audit taxpayers (including most individuals and Hindu Undivided Families) is September 15, 2025.
- This date was extended from the usual July 31, 2025, to provide taxpayers more time.
- The Income Tax Department has clarified that there is no further extension beyond September 15, 2025, despite some social media claims.
Consequences of Missing the Deadline:
- If you miss the September 15, 2025, deadline, you can still file a belated return until December 31, 2025.
- However, filing a belated return comes with penalties and other repercussions:
- Late filing fee: A penalty of $5,000 will be levied if your total income exceeds $5 lakh. If your total income is $5 lakh or less, the penalty is restricted to $1,000.
- Interest on tax due: You will be charged a simple interest of 1% per month on the unpaid tax amount from the due date until the date of filing.
- Loss of benefits: You may not be able to carry forward certain losses (such as capital or business losses) to future years.
- Delayed refunds: The processing of any refunds you are due may be delayed.
- Increased scrutiny: Late filings may be subject to closer scrutiny from the Income Tax Department.
- For taxpayers who have to get their accounts audited, the deadline is October 31, 2025.
