Income Tax Department Intensifies Scrutiny on Refund Claims
The Income Tax Department has initiated a nationwide crackdown on fraudulent exemption and deduction claims as the deadline for filing tax returns approaches. In an important letter issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the authority responsible for formulating policies regarding direct taxes, tax officials have been instructed to identify suspicious refund claims and suspend the processing of such returns pending investigation.
This initiative comes in response to a noticeable increase in bogus refund and exemption filings during this tax season, compelling the department to enhance its scrutiny measures. As per a CBDT communication reviewed by NDTV Profit, investigating officers are mandated to actively pinpoint and halt questionable claims, with a subsequent recovery action planned for instances where refunds have already been disbursed.
The CBDT, operating under the Ministry of Finance, plays a crucial role in overseeing the administration of direct taxes in India while establishing policy guidelines for the Income Tax Department. In a previous communication, the board emphasized the necessity for effective supervision by regional heads, particularly Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax (PCCITs). They are responsible for ensuring that queries raised during assessments are not only relevant but also justified. The CBDT highlighted that due diligence must be exercised when issuing notices for scrutiny, particularly stressing that irrelevant queries should be entirely avoided.
This crackdown is anticipated to significantly impact returns wherein deductions appear inflated or lack sufficient documentation. As the July 31 deadline for filing income tax returns draws nearer, taxpayers are strongly advised to ensure accuracy and transparency in their filings to evade potential delays or legal complications.
