Beware of Fake Income Tax Refund Scams
With the normal ITR filing deadline coming to an end and income tax refunds starting to get processed, taxpayers need to be wary of scammers attempting to exploit this period. Fraudulent phishing messages containing links are being sent to taxpayers, falsely claiming that their ITRs have been processed and a certain amount has been approved as a refund.
It’s important to note that the Income Tax Department never quotes any amount in messages or emails about refunds. Any legitimate refund information will be communicated only after opening the attachment of the ITR acknowledgement. Unfortunately, this is not the first time such fake ITR refund emails and messages have circulated. Every year, after the Income Tax Department begins issuing refunds following the original return filing deadline, scammers try to take advantage of this opportunity to target individual taxpayers awaiting tax refunds from the government.
In response to these fraudulent emails and messages, the Income Tax Department continues to provide cautionary advice to raise awareness among taxpayers, helping them avoid falling victim to such scams. In the past few days following the July 31 ITR filing deadline, numerous individuals have received phishing messages asking them to click a link in the email or message to verify their bank account for income tax refunds.
One such message reads, “You have been approved a tax refund of Rs 15,490/-, and the amount will be credited to your account number 5xxxxx6755. If this is not correct, please update your bank account information by visiting the link below.” It’s crucial to emphasize that the tax department never sends links for a refund and taxpayers should abstain from sharing any personal financial information or clicking on suspicious links. The Income Tax Department never requests detailed personal information, such as PIN numbers, passwords, or dates of birth, for credit cards, banks, or other financial accounts.
Scammers are deceitfully persuading taxpayers to update their bank account information through fraudulent links. It’s imperative to be cautious about sharing any sensitive information and always verify the authenticity of messages before taking any action related to income tax returns. Remain vigilant and stay informed to safeguard yourself against potential scams.
