The introduction of Goods & Services Tax (GST) marked a overall historical and transformative shift in India’s taxation landscape, aiming to bring about greater efficiency, simplicity and uniformity in the indirect taxation system. Since its implementation, GST has not only streamlined the indirect tax system but has also played a pivotal role in promoting ease of doing business and economic growth. One of the key benefits of GST has been the elimination of the cascading effect of multiple taxes, which has lowered production costs, thereby benefitted end consumers and making Indian products more competitive globally, thus strengthening the country’s position in international markets.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) through its GST & Indirect Taxes Committee has been assisting the Government by providing suggestions/ technical inputs to the Government on GST policy making and implementation. Furthermore, the Committee has consistently demonstrated its proactive approach by providing invaluable support to our members, enhancing their knowledge and skills through various initiatives like publications, certificate courses, conferences, programmes, live webcasts, e-learning etc. on GST.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts taken by the GST & Indirect Taxes Committee in revising the publication, ‘Handbook on Exempted Supplies under GST’. This publication aims to provide a clear understanding of the legal provisions relating to exemption under GST. Additionally, it presents the various exemptions extended to goods and services under GST law in clear, accessible language. By simplifying complex legal provisions and compiling the numerous exemptions at one place, this Handbook serves as a valuable reference for stakeholders navigating the nuances of GST exemptions. This publication is updated by incorporating the amendments taken place till 15th April, 2025.
I would like to express my appreciation for the efforts of CA. Rajendra Kumar P, Chairman and CA. Umesh Sharma, Vice-Chairman along with the experts who have contributed in developing this useful publication which will benefit our members and other stakeholders.
I am confident that the readers will find this publication very useful in their professional assignments enabling them to fulfil their professional duties and responsibilities in more efficient and effective manner.
President, ICAI
