Launches India’s First UPI ATM with Cash Deposit Facility, Heralding a New Era of Cardless Banking

Bengaluru, India – In a significant move poised to reshape the landscape of retail banking in India, fintech-turned-bank, Slice, has launched the country’s first Unified Payments Interface (UPI) powered ATM that allows for both cash withdrawals and deposits through a simple QR code scan, eliminating the need for a physical debit or credit card. This pioneering initiative, unveiled at Slice’s new physical bank branch in Bengaluru, is being touted as a “game-changing infrastructure shift” that could accelerate the move towards a more digitally integrated and accessible banking ecosystem.

How it Works: A Seamless QR Code Experience

The new UPI ATM offers a streamlined and secure way for customers to interact with their bank accounts.

For cash withdrawals:

  1. Users select the ‘UPI Cash Withdrawal’ option on the ATM screen.
  2. They enter the desired withdrawal amount.
  3. A unique QR code is displayed on the ATM screen.
  4. The user then opens any UPI-enabled mobile application (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or a bank’s native app) and scans the QR code.
  5. The transaction is authenticated using the user’s secure UPI PIN on their mobile device.
  6. Upon successful authentication, the ATM dispenses the cash.

For cash deposits:

The process for depositing cash is similarly straightforward, initiated by scanning a QR code on the ATM. This feature is a key differentiator, as most existing UPI-enabled ATMs only offer withdrawal facilities. This two-way functionality provides a comprehensive solution for cardless cash management.

A “Game-Changing Infra Shift”: The Vision Behind the Innovation

According to Slice’s leadership, the introduction of the UPI ATM is more than just a technological upgrade; it represents a fundamental rethinking of the banking experience in India.

Rajan Bajaj, Founder and Executive Director of Slice, has emphasized the company’s ambition to “reimagine India’s credit infrastructure.” He stated, “With Slice UPI ATMs, we want to reduce the cost of deposit and withdrawal of cash to a level that basic banking services are economically viable for a billion Indians in the future.”

Satish Kumar Kalra, MD and CEO of Slice, described the launch as a “revolution in how India will perceive banking and finance,” underscoring the company’s vision of creating a banking system built on technology, simplicity, and trust.

The Broader Impact on Indian Banking

The introduction of Slice’s UPI ATM with a deposit facility is set to have a multi-faceted impact on the Indian banking sector:

  • Enhanced Customer Convenience: By eliminating the reliance on physical cards, this innovation caters to the digitally savvy Indian consumer who is increasingly dependent on their smartphone for all financial transactions.
  • Increased Security: QR code-based transactions are inherently more secure as they prevent the risk of card skimming and cloning, where fraudsters steal card information from the magnetic stripe. The use of a dynamic, single-use QR code for each transaction adds another layer of security.
  • Deeper Financial Inclusion: The interoperable nature of UPI means that customers of any bank can potentially use these ATMs. This, coupled with the ease of use, could encourage greater participation in the formal banking system, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where card penetration might be lower.
  • A Bridge Between Digital and Cash Economies: While UPI has been a phenomenal success in driving digital payments, the need for cash transactions persists. The UPI ATM acts as a seamless bridge, allowing users to effortlessly move between their digital wallets and physical cash. The addition of a deposit feature further strengthens this link.
  • Spurring Further Innovation: Slice’s move is expected to catalyze other banks and fintech companies to accelerate their own development of UPI-based banking solutions, leading to a more competitive and innovative market.

While the long-term success and widespread adoption of this technology will depend on factors such as the rollout of more such ATMs across the country and user education, the launch of Slice’s UPI ATM marks a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards a truly digital and inclusive financial future. It firmly establishes the Unified Payments Interface not just as a payment mechanism, but as a foundational pillar of modern banking infrastructure.
