The Greater Chennai Corporation has taken a significant step towards increasing the professional tax levied on its residents. A resolution was recently passed by the Corporation, proposing a 35% hike in the professional tax for individuals earning between Rs 21,001 and Rs 60,000 per month.  

The GCC council recently mooted a slew of upward revisions, including a 35% increase in biannual professional tax for salaried individuals.

  • Proposed Increase: The proposed hike aims to increase the current professional tax rates for this income bracket.   
  • Government Approval: The resolution, while passed by the Corporation, still requires approval from the Tamil Nadu government before it can be implemented.
  • Impact: This increase in professional tax is expected to generate additional revenue for the Corporation, which can be utilized for various civic development projects and services within Chennai city.

Further Developments:

The Tamil Nadu government will now review the Corporation’s proposal and decide on its approval.
