On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026. The Session will commence on 28 January 2026 and continue till 2 April 2026. The first phase concludes on 13 February 2026, with Parliament reassembling on 9 March 2026, a vital step towards meaningful debate and people-centric governance.

Recap: Key Highlights of Budget 2025-26

  • Income Tax Relief: A major highlight was the complete tax rebate on annual income up to ₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals under the New Tax Regime (including standard deduction).
  • Middle-Class Focus: The budget aimed to boost household savings and consumption by increasing the spending power of the middle class.
  • Agriculture: Launched the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana to improve productivity in 100 low-productivity districts.
  • MSMEs: The credit guarantee cover for MSMEs was significantly enhanced from ₹5 crore to ₹10 crore.
  • Infrastructure: Earmarked a massive capex outlay of ₹11.21 lakh crore.

Looking Ahead: Budget 2026-27 (Feb 1, 2026)

The government is currently in the final stages of preparing the next budget. Here is the expected schedule:

  • January 29, 2026: Presentation of the Economic Survey by the Chief Economic Advisor.
  • February 1, 2026 (Sunday): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to present her 9th consecutive budget.
    • Note: Despite being a Sunday, the Parliament is expected to hold a special session for the budget presentation, and stock markets (BSE/NSE) usually remain open for a special trading session.

Current Expectations: The focus is expected to remain on the “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) vision, with potential emphasis on:

  • Deepening AI and Tech integration in governance.
  • Further incentives for Green Energy and Electric Vehicles (EVs).
  • Rural housing and urban infrastructure development.
